The New Patriotic Party running mate for the 2016 elections, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has criticized the performance of the Mahama-led administration on the economic front accusing it of using massive infrastructural projects as a smokescreen to cover up for the huge debt stock and the taxes collected over the years.

Speaking at a public lecture titled, ‘The State of the Ghanaian Economy – A Foundation of Concrete or Straw’, chaired by Former President John Agyekum Kufuor, Dr. Bawumia revealed that, the total cost of infrastructure from loans, grants and taxes from 2009 to date, is around 7 billion dollars, whereas government has borrowed in excess of 39 billion dollars.

“The government is attempting to hoodwink Ghanaians by claiming a massive increase in infrastructure development. Why do I say so? …If you sum the total cost of infrastructural expenditure by this government, the total cost from loans, grants and taxes from 2009 to date, if you add all what they’ve spent on infrastructure, it is less than $7 billion” Dr. MahamuduBawumia, said.

Dr. Bawumia promised that if Ghanaians vote for the NPP in December, his government under Nana Akufo-Addo will turn around the fortunes of the country and the redeem Ghanaians from the hardships of the Mahama-led government.

“For example we’ll be able to finance the teacher and nursing raining allowances. As part of the job creation agenda, the NPP believes in empowering the Ghanaian private sector. We’ll pass the legislation that at least 70% of all tax payer finance contract and procurement be executed by local corporate entities,” he stressed.
