UBA Appoints First Female MD

The Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of UBA Bank, Mrs Abiola Bawuah, has formally assumed office as the first lady head of the bank.

Mrs Bawuah joined UBA Ghana on March 1, 2013, as the Deputy Managing Director and has already contributed immensely to the performance of the bank. A release from the bank said: �Mrs Bawuah, being UBA Ghana�s first Ghanaian, as well as first female MD/CEO, brings a wealth of local flair, finesse and know-how, coupled with her enormous banking experience.�

Until her appointment with UBA, Mrs Bawuah was an Executive Director at Zenith Bank. She previously held the positions of General Manager - Marketing and Group Head - Retail Banking.

Before joining Zenith Bank, she worked at Standard Chartered Bank as a Business Financial Manager; Cal Bank as a Senior Financial Analyst and at Strategic African Securities as an Authorised Dealing Officer/ Broker.

Mrs Bawuah holds a BSc in Actuarial Science, an LLB, an EMBA (Finance) from University of Ghana, as well as numerous leadership qualifications from Harvard Business School, Columbia, INSEAD and Institut Villa Pierrefeu in Switzerland.

The release said the CEO had set three main goals she intended to pursue: taking UBA Ghana to new heights; exceeding customer�s expectations � with improved service delivery; and ensuring greater focus on UBA�s Core values of humility, empathy, integrity and resilience.

The release further quoted Mrs Bawuah as saying: �UBA Ghana, in 2014, will be driven by a diligent focus on our core values and in so doing the achievement of the first and second goals will be effortless, as we all humble ourselves to serve with excellence, empathise with our customers and work to make the bank the premier banking institution in Ghana while doing so with integrity and every effort we can muster.�

In a related development, the release said: �The former MD/CEO, Mr Oliver Alawuba, following a successful stint in Ghana, has been elevated to the position of CEO West Africa, with the mandate of overseeing UBA�s business in Ghana, Cote d�Ivoire, Burkina Faso, Senegal, Guinea (Conakry), Liberia, Benin and Sierra Leone.
