The Ghana Chamber of Telecommunications has appointed Mr. Kwaku Addo Sakyi-Addo, a corporate communications specialist and broadcaster, as its Chief Executive Officer. He becomes the first CEO of the Chamber.

The Chamber of Telecommunications was registered in 2010 by telecoms operators in Ghana to jointly promote the industry. It will soon be ceremonially launched. The Chamber would enable telecoms operators to make collective input in the formulation of policy, provide a platform for the discussion of matters of common interest and facilitate the sharing of industry knowledge.

The Chamber would also provide the interface between the Operators, the National Communication Authority, legislators, the executive and the general public on matters affecting the telecom industry as a whole.

“After months of searching for someone to take up this job, we’re delighted to have Kwaku with us as the first CEO of our Chamber,” said Philip Sowah, CEO of Airtel which holds the rotating Presidency of the Governing Council of the Chamber. “We believe that his professional experience, network and wide breadth of knowledge will be of benefit to the Chamber and the development of the telecoms industry in Ghana,” Mr. Sowah said.

Mr. Sakyi-Addo was General Manager (Communications) of Aqua Vitens Rand from 2007, and played a major role towards ensuring the full completion of the company’s five-year management contract in Ghana. He was also a broadcaster for 16 years on Joy FM from 1995 until he announced his retirement from radio this month.

Sakyi-Addo said: “I’m happy to be part of an industry that’s making life so much easier for millions in Ghana and billions around the world. But there’s also a lot of work to be done; we have to keep our eyes on all the cogs in this ever-changing industry so we can properly anchor and secure the future, and I’ll give my very best.”

Sakyi-Addo has been a corporate communications consultant for Standard Chartered Bank in Ghana and Cameroon, the German Development Agency GTZ, and on USAID projects. He worked for the Ghana News Agency from 1984-92 and subsequently for BBC for 13 years alongside Reuters, the world’s largest news agency, for seven years.

Sakyi-Addo is a Chevening Scholar. He holds an Executive Master of Governance and Leadership degree from GIMPA and a post-Graduate Diploma in Communication Studies from the University of Ghana, Legon.

He also holds Advanced Diplomas in Media from the International Institute for Journalism in Berlin, Germany, and the University of Wales in Cardiff. He was awarded a World Press Institute Fellowship in American Studies which he held in 1992 at Macalester College, St. Paul, Minnesota.

He’s a Foundation Fellow of the African Leadership Initiative and a Fellow of the prestigious Aspen Global Leadership Network in Aspen, Colorado, and the Salzburg Seminar in Austria.

The two-time Journalist of the Year was decorated with the Order of the Volta in 2007 by the Government of Ghana.

Signed: PHILIP SOWAH, CEO, AIRTEL & PRESIDENT OF THE GOVERNING COUNCIL
