The National Labour Commission has directed the management of Vodafone to suspend its compulsory redundancy exercise involving 950 workers of the company, pending final determination of the matter on September 30.
The Commission issued the directive after meeting with the management of Vodafone and the Communications Workers Union on Wednesday, based on the complaints of the latter.
Mohammed Affum, Public Relations Officer of the Commission told the times that, the commission had asked the management of Vodafone to stay action on the intended redundancy exercise until September 30 when the Commission would meet both parties again for a definitive decision on the matter.
He pointed out that the commission�s directive to suspend the compulsory redundancy exercise did not necessarily mean that the letters given to workers penciled for the redundancy exercise were invalid, stressing that, that would be determined when both parties meet the Commission on September 30.
On Wednesday, September 9, the management of Vodafone issued letters to individuals, including local union leaders, slated to be laid off by December this year. The union has questioned the procedure by management, describing it as �autocratic and a violation of workers� rights,� citing management�s disregard of decisions taken at the company�s Standing Joint Negotiation Committee.
