Vice President John Mahama has commended African countries for their resilience during the world recession. According to him, it is significant for Ghana to have come out of recession when greater economies like Greece are still struggling.
Mr. Mahama was speaking in the chamber of parliament after a debate on the supplementary budget brought before the house. He expressed joy in the progressive growth of the economy and promised of more to come.
Vice President John Mahama’s participation in the proceedings of Parliament on Thursday July 21 is the first for any vice President in the 4th Republic of Ghana.
Addressing members of the House, the Vice President said “the whole world was going through an economic crisis from 2008 till now and significantly, African countries have shown more resilience in growing out of the crisis than countries in other parts of the world.
“Several countries in Europe are still going through those crises and if you look at countries like Greece, their economies are growing negatively.
"Incidentally for Ghana, in 2009 we saw depreciation in GDP growth rate from 7.7 to a bit above 4 percent and happily that bounced back in 2010 to 7.7 percent of growth.
“Often I understand when these debates take place that it is the duty of the minority to show as bleak an economic picture possible but I must say that the economy of this country is growing positively and doing very well”.
