MTN mobile telecom company has attained about 98 per cent coverage in the Volta Region, Alfred Kwame Moyimeh, Volta Regional Transmissions Officer of the company said on Friday.

He said MTN was now engaged in boosting reception in “dark spots,” where reception in between communities were nil or weak.

Mr Moyimeh was briefing Journalists in Ho as part of MTN’s interactions with media practitioners.

He said more cell sites were also being built to augment existing cell sites in areas with fast increasing patronage in the region.

Mr Moyimeh said the company was working to overcome transmission in communities located in valleys where the topography was particularly challenging.

He said to ensure speedy transmissions MTN was now using microwave transmission instead of satellite.

Mr Ebenezer Biedo, MTN Volta Regional Manager, urged Ghanaians to embrace the MTN’s data services as it was an efficient and cost effective communication channel.

Mrs Georgina Asare Fiagbenu, Senior Manager Corporate Communications of MTN said the company appreciated the contribution of the media to its leadership position in the telephony business in Ghana and looked forward to further strengthen the partnership.

Regarding how the company was performing under the Mobile Number Portability regime, she said, there had been movements “in and out and that the MTN has the competitive strength to maintain its market leadership”.

Mrs Fiagbenu said the MTN Foundation, which manages the company’s social responsibility programmes, would continue to bring help to needy communities in areas of health and education.

She hinted that a third area would be announced soon.

Nii Laryea Sowah, Executive Secretary of the Private Newspaper Publishers Association (PRINPAG), lauded MTN for giving visibility to the media in Ghana, noting that it came to give respectability to the Ghana Journalists Awards and now moving on to support PRINPAG.

The MTN team later visited the GJA Volta Regional Secretariat and the media houses to interact with staff.
