The Ghana Standards Authority has reiterated that the ban on the importation of some used clothing popularly known as ‘obroni wawu’ is in full force.
According to the Authority, the ban which has been in place since 1994 is against the importation of four things - used handkerchiefs, used underpants, used mattresses and used sanitary ware such as bath tabs, water closets among others.
Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show on Tuesday, the Head of Marketing and Public Relations, Kofi Amponsah Bediako indicated that “these things were banned purely for health reasons. ”
“When they were banned in 1994, I believe it was strange at that time and probably it was difficult to enforce it, but the Ministry of Trade from last year thinks that the ban should be enforced and since Ghana Standards Board is an agency in charge of standards, they reminded us of the need to enforce the ban on used cloths and underpants but it is purely on health grounds. ”
He also adviced manufacturers especially those who produce food and water to pay particular attention to their environment and ensure that their products are neat and clean right from source through packaging until it gets to the final consumer.
