The Vice President of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama has stated that the Mills-led administration is working on a serious back-up plan for the crisis-ridden STX housing project, adding there is a high possibility that government may terminate the deal.
The controversial 1. 5 billion dollar housing project was approved by Ghana’s Parliament in 2010 despite stiff opposition from minority New Patriotic Party lawmakers.
Over a year after the deal was approved to allow the STX partners build some 30,000 housing units for the nation’s security forces, not a single block has been laid at any of the sites reserved for the project.
Answering questions from members of the parliamentary press corps on Friday, the Vice President said given the protracted nature of the boardroom crisis he doubts if the multi-billion dollar project will ever see the light of day. “What we are doing is that we are working on other back up arrangements to ensure that we are able to provide housing for Ghanaians.
“The way things are going I don’t see how that project will go on. The wrangling is getting worse rather getting better so I don’t see how that project will go forward.
“But we are working on other alternative projects. ..at a point if we can’t go forward we will have to suspend it” John Mahama said.
