The Deputy General Secretary of the Public Services Workers Union (PSWU) of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), Mr John Sampa, has said if a proposed strategic partnership agreement between the Ghana Airport Company Limited (GACL) and TAM-SUMMA Consortium, a Turkish company, concerning the management of the Kotoka International Airport is approved, the deal will force the hands of the government into privatising the national asset.
Mr Sampa said per some documents available to the PSWU, the government of Ghana will control only 34 per cent shares of KIA if the deal gets the nod.
According to him, even though the government has denied that KIA is being sold, the agreement, as it stands, will make the private company the majority shareholder.
He told Accra100.5FM’s parliamentary correspondent Richard Appiah Sarpong in an exclusive interview after a press conference in Accra on Monday, 13 July 2020 that: “The KIA workers are part of this union and, so, we had a meeting with them last week. During that meeting, they showed us documentation to the effect that the KIA is about to be sold”.
“They showed us a proposal from the government, which centres on public-private partnership and one that when approved, will give the government only 34 per cent and the Turkish company consortium 66%”, he said.
“If you enter into an agreement with someone who will have 66 per cent shares, then it simply means you have sold the company.”
Mr Sampa’s comments come after Aviation Minister Joseph Kofi Adda denied media reports that KIA was being sold.
According to the Minister, what is being considered for deliberation by the Ministry and shareholders including GACL, is a strategic partnership to improve service delivery and expansion of infrastructure at the airport to achieve the government’s vision of making Ghana the aviation hub within the West African sub-region.

When are we as a Country also going to have a strategic investment in another Country for even 51%Will that country seriously consider our even 51% ? no. i don't think so. 10-15% at most. However in my beloved Country Ghana. Aka Gateway to West Africa, they are willing to a whopping 66% out and they call it ' strategic investment'. They should not go in that direction. Be open to the people and raise funds internally to manage the facility. Its our National Pride!!!
This is the reason why I think Mr Ada should not hold any public office for a simple reason that he is incompetent. At a time when Ghanaians started feeling proud of their country and contributing to its development because some Ghanaians are showing their capabilities to manage and improve the people's lives, he on the other-hand lazily looks for the cheap and easy way without thinking about the sovereignty and dignity we attach to Ghanaian own. We are not going to tighten our belt for the west to continue to enrich themselves anymore. Take a look at your own government, with very little or no funds, they have been able to turn things in the right direction. Again take a look at Education ministry and Agric, and use your brains to think about how those leaders have been able to achieve such results in just three years. We are no longer going to accept flimsy excuses for debt. Is either you put up and get Ghanaians to find the money and manage it so that wealth stays in Ghana or you take a bow for someone to do it. The president should not accept any lazy minister's proposal, they must use their brains to work. We have tightened our belts for far too long and we did it for our children and grandchildren to benefit not for foreigners to continue to subject us into poverty.
