Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has stated emphatically that his government will scrap the 15% tax on electricity and the emission levy if elected President of Ghana.
The controversial taxes were part of the numerous taxes introduced in by the government.
Delivering his first major address to the nation after his election as NPP flagbearer, during which he gave broad policy outlines of a Bawumia led-Presidency, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia minced no words in declaring his opposition to taxes on emission levy stating that he will abolish emission-levy as President.
‘’There will be no emissions levy under my administration’’, he revealed.
Dr. Bawumia also announced that as part of a new tax regime by his government, he will scrap tax on betting as well as the proposed 15% VAT on electricity tariffs, if it is in existence by January 2025.
He also announced that his government would introduce what he described as a friendly, flat tax regime for Ghana, which will boost individuals and businesses, particularly small and medium-scale enterprises (SMEs).
“My administration will introduce a very simple, citizen and business-friendly flat tax regime. A flat tax of a percentage of income for individuals and SMEs, which constitute 98% of all businesses in Ghana, with appropriate exemption thresholds set to protect the poor,” Dr. Bawumia indicated.

Hmnnnn, big brother Bawumia, from where i stand, i see you as someone who means well for Ghana. Unfortunately some people who think the NPP is their personal property have succeeded in making your work very difficult. Yes, you may be a driver's mate, the difficulty is that in between you and the driver, there is another person behaving like the car owner because your master i e the driver himself fears him. The thinking of most Ghanaians is that you are part of the group that is inflicting pain on the very people who had so much trust in your master ie the driver, to bring the desired positive change Ghanaians have been yearning for. Your speech yesterday creates an impression that this untouchable person is does what he likes with the economy without considering your inputs. Fact is that all what you said pre-2016 was with the thinking that, what you were thinking was same as your master and "his people" were thinking. Today you will be the first to admit that they had a completely different mind of their own, i e, a direct opposite of what you were thinking. Now your main challenge has to with whether Ghanaians will listen, as for hearing, they will hear you, but will they listen? Ask John Mahama , he will tell you he had a message in 2016, the good people of Ghana heard him alright but did not listen, so it is not about the people hearing your message, it is all about whether they will listen. Am for NPP, but your master i e the driver has come to make John Mahama look like a saint thus the field day he's having touring the country. The Nigerians have a saying thus "Meat that has fat will prove it by the heat of fire" As the fire heats up, lets see which of the two meats has fat.
Even though we all knew what was going to come out of this empty speech, but I didn't expect this level of insult to our intelligence by such level of aggravated vague promises that contradict ideologically. Is it just that Bawumia perceive Ghanaians as so weak mentally that you just have to tell something that sounds "sweet"? How can a government with economic management led by Bawumia believe on one hand that it's legitimate to institute these nuisance taxes on Ghanaians and turn around that when he is finally in the driver's seat, all those taxes introduced under his watch will be scrapped? Is he telling us that by 2025 they will have outlived their purpose or that the "wicked" leader would have exited power? What didn't they promise in 2016, soon after they won power, they did remove some of the taxes and duties, only to turn around and make it far worse than it has ever been. He is basically telling us that the same strategy will be implemented but he's luring "guIIible" Ghanaians to fall for the trap. Once you give his first term, he will definitely get another term and that's when he and his canals will show you the real pepper 🌶️
