ECG Must Fix This Problem!

The goal for the introduction of the prepaid electricity metres into the country was to ensure efficiency in terms of revenue for the state energy distributing company— Electricity Company of Ghana. And rightly so, we believe ever since the ECG replaced the post-paid metres with prepaid metres, they have done well in terms of revenue collection.

Thus, situations whereby power consumers incur huge debts on postpaid metres have become a thing of the past. This is because this time around it is pay as you use with the prepaid metres.

Of course, the prepaid metres have also come with their own associated problems. The latest one which appears to be inconveniencing loads of customers is their inability to use the prepaid cards to purchase power.

Reports indicate that residents of Dansoman, Korle Bu, Achimota and Kaneshie in Accra, are finding it difficult to buy power with their cards. The development has led to long queues at ECG offices in Accra. Following this problem, the country’s power distributor has come out to explain that the problem is due to some technical hitches with their system.

Weekend Today can imagine the frustrations customers in the above areas are going through, especially when they have the means to purchase power but are unable to buy.

It is in the light of the above that Weekend Today is calling on the ECG to fix whatever technical problems they are having with their system. This is critical because aside from the domestic consumption of power, they must be mindful of the fact that there are others who use electricity for commercial purposes. And how do they expect such customers to run their businesses?

Thus, the inability of these customers to purchase power means they are losing revenue one way or the other. It is therefore our hope that ECG will address the problem as quickly as possible to bring relief to the affected consumers.
