STATESMAN OPINION: Ghanaians will vote to change the course of their destiny

The concept of a “World Bank” of various political parties has obviously become integral part of Ghana’s democratic experiment. Various parties lay claim to various regions of Ghana as their strong-holds, which in our Ghanaian lexis, are referred to as “world banks.”

These areas have always stucked with political parties, through thick-and-thin; and as a matter of fact, we have had instances where people have boldly declared that “as for our constituency, even if a goat is made the parliamentary candidate, we shall still vote for it.” This indeed, demonstrates the extent to which this fanatic affiliation can be taken to unimaginable heights.

This behaviour of electorate in supposed “world banks” of various political parties has, over the years, benefitted only the ruling class of political parties, while ordinary supports have always been taken for granted. What often happen is that, upon arrival of the 4year electioneering season, leaders of these political parties simply swarm their supposed ‘world banks,” not to peach any sensible message, but to engage in politics of mindless ethnocentrisms.

Such practice has often been spearheaded by a notable political party which has never had clear-cut message, and has never had the well-being of ordinary Ghanaians at heart.

Now, for the 59years Ghana has been an independent nation, the P[NDC] has had nearly 30years in power, during which our country’s socioeconomic advancements have been severely malnourished at every step of their governance, crass incompetence has been the hallmark of NDC, with massive looting of state coffers being their sole track-record.

The point is, the good people of Volta region have, over the years, been genuinely loyal to the NDC, and have offered the party unflinching support at very election cycle. This has been the case, largely because the founder hails from the region, which in itself, is not a bad move. But I also know that the good people of Volta region will not support a political party, on the sole account of its founder being one of them.

The good people of Volta are very discerning, and it is obvious they supported the party out of love and conviction. But this level of sincere loyalty is what the wicked NDC has taken for granted over the years. The frustrations of Voltarians and clear loss of faith in the NDC is what has been on clear display as the NPP flagbearer, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s ongoing campaign tour of the region.

On his various stops in the Volta region, opinion leaders and the people have warmly welcomed and accepted the message being preached by Nana Addo, and have actually topped it up with open expressions of total disappointment in NDC, and have pledged to massively vote for change this time around.

Indeed, the opportunity to effect a change in government, as prescribed under the fourth republican constitution, is actually a rare chance to change one’s course of socioeconomic destiny, and I believe this is what the good people of Volta region have resolved to do.
