The Education Directorate of Tarkwa Nsuaem Municipality is poised to work effectively in close collaboration with AngloGold Ashanti Iduapriem Mine in the area of education in the Mines host communities. The Director for Education for the municipality, Mrs. Veronica Ama Jackson gave the assurance when the Sustainability Department of the Mine called on her outfit.

The visit afforded the Mine the opportunity to welcome the Director who has recently been transferred to the Tarkwa Nsuaem Municipality. It was also an opportunity to re-introduce the Mines educational interventions and to deepen partnership with the educational directorate.

In a brief presentation, the Senior Manager Sustainability for the Mine, Mr. Emmanuel Baidoo, said AngloGold Ashanti Iduapriem Mine has done a lot to improve upon the lives of people in its host communities particularly in the area of education. He mentioned that the Mine has moved from request-driven supports to a more proactive way of contributing to addressing the needs of the communities.

He enumerated some of the interventions the Mine is currently undertaking in the area of education including the Basic Education Improvement Project which aims at improving the Basic Education Certificate Examination pass rate by seventy percent in host communities by 2015.

Mrs Veronica Ama Jackson on her part was supportive of the interventions indicating that as stakeholders in education, the chiefs and people in the host communities must be made to ensure that educational infrastructure in their communities are well maintained.

She commended the Mine for the initiative adding that she will ensure that the best practices from the mines interventions are replicated in other communities in the municipality.
