The Ghana Red Cross Society (GRCS) on Friday sensitised the National House of Chiefs (NHC) on the causes, mode of spreading, effects and the prevention of the H1N1 influenza.
Professor Kwabena Bosompem, newly elected President of the GRCS told a sitting of the house that, although the current state of the pandemic in the country was safe, there was the need for intensification of public education on the issue.
He called on the chiefs to liaise with the GRCS to embark on the campaign to help protect the people from being infected.
Prof. Bosompem urged the chiefs to educate their subjects to support and assist the GRCS in its efforts to spread awareness on the need for the citizenry to stay healthy and protect themselves from preventable diseases and other health related issues.
He said the society would soon launch an initiative called the "Red Cross Action Ghana initiative" to liaise with the metropolitan, municipal and district assemblies to carry out development issues, especially on health care delivery.
The President said the new initiative would promote quality health care delivery.
Mr Andrews Frimpong, Secretary General of the GRCS appealed to the chiefs to involve members of the society in conflict resolution since they have the expertise.
He debunked the erroneous impression that the GRCS was part of the Ghana Health Service, saying although they had something in common, the society was a humanitarian institution and its activities are centred on relief services.
Prof. Naa John S. Nabila, President of the NHC, commended the GRCS for the initiative and pledged the support of the chiefs on the advocacy role it was playing to improve health care delivery.
