In the face of rising global insecurity and concerns on biological warfare, the Nigerian government has been tasked to support local drugs manufacturing companies to enable Nigeria achieve relative self sufficiency in drugs manufacturing capability.

The Group Managing Director, Drugfield Pharmaceuticals Limited Olakunle Ekundayo raised the concern during the commissioning of its multibillion naira intravenous drug manufacturing line at Drugfiled Industry, Lagos-Ibadan expressway, Sango, Ogun State.

He said, unless Nigeria begins to invest in drugs and medical care, it remains vulnerable in the event of a biological warfare as drugs coming into Nigeria may be poisoned.

This and the need to meet the demand for intravenous infusions prompted the company to invest in it.

“The commercial introduction of Drugfield brand of infusion products into the Nigerian market will substantially improve the availability and accessibility of products to consumers in private and public health institutions” he said.

He explained that because infusions go into blood streams directly, special care and high safety measures have been factored into the manufacturing process.

For now he said, the plant has the capability of producing 30,000 bags of infusions per day but can be expanded to 40,000 in the future.

The acting General Manager, Drugfiled Specialty Products ltd, Mr. Babalola Sesan, said the intravenous infusions are available in regular sizes of half and one litre with constituents of carbohydrates, salts, polyelectrolyte in singular or combined compositions.
