Mosquitoes and other insects have taken over the Effiduase Government Junior Staff Quarters in Koforidua.
The situation had increased malaria infection in the residential area, which is on the main Koforidua-Kumasi road and has about 60-100 blocks of apartments serving many government workers as accommodation with a handful of private residences.
One could hardly stay outside without using any preventive method to drive away mosquitoes and other insects at any time of the day.
A resident in the area who spoke to the GNA on condition of anonymity said each day residents were forced to use insecticides sprays to control the mosquitoes but it appeared that they had become resistant to the sprays.
He said children in the area were always seen with insect or mosquitoes bite marks on them, since they suffer bites during the day when they play outside and appealed to the environmental officers to come to their aid.
When the Ghana News Agency (GNA) visited the area there were signs that there was no proper drainage system for the houses, with all the waste water collecting in pools around the community.
Behind some of the houses one could see black polythene bags full of liquid waste littered around.
