More pregnant Ghanaian women, particularly the rich, now request for Caesarean sections (CS) in their time of delivery, Ms. Angela Abugri, the Principal Nursing Officer for Public Health at the Ashaiman Municipal Health Directorate, has disclosed.
She said it has now become fashionable for an increasing number of rich women and their partners to ask doctors to put them under the knife, as a way of avoiding a further opening of their private parts and losing their figure.
Yes, they will usually tell you (the doctor) that this is what they want because, to them, they dont want the normal push which opens their place and lose their shape, she noted, expressing surprise at why some women would not want to be operated upon during delivery.
This only shows us the level of ignorance in the system, Ms. Abugri told The Spectator on Monday, explaining however that, Caesarean sections were only resorted to in the unfortunate event that a pregnant woman could not give birth naturally due to some complications.
She equipped: We are not here for fashion. Were here to save lives, so we only do operations when the situation calls for it.
Ms. Abugri, therefore, advised pregnant women and their partners to pay particular attention to their ante-natal lessons seriously, because through that, the appropriate education and guidance are given to address some of these funny misconceptions.
We sometimes also encounter lactating mothers who decide not to breastfeed their children because they say they dont want their breasts to sag. These are all wrong perceptions which if pregnant women prioritize their ante-natal attendance to hospitals, can be avoided, she said.
Ms Abugri indicated that childbirth and nursing are serious issues which personnel of the Ghana Health Service (GHS), particularly midwives, do not compromise in any way in the name of modernity or fashion.
