The Nkoranza South Municipality recorded six maternal deaths in 2015 as against five cases each in 2013 and 2014.

Municipal Acting Director of Health Services, Winifred Tienaa, announced this at the 2015 annual stakeholders review meeting of the Nkoranza District Health Insurance Scheme at Nkoranza in the Brong-Ahafo Region.

According to her, the deaths occurred at the Nkoranza St Theresa’s Catholic Hospital, saying that two were referred from the Nkoranza North District and another two from Sekye-Domase in the Ashanti Region.

Madam Tienaa complained that such deaths usually occurred among adolescents below 19 years and women above 35 years.

She, therefore, urged females in those age brackets to attend ante-natal clinics regularly during pregnancy to receive the right health service information for proper care of themselves and unborn babies to avoid losing their lives.

Manager of the scheme, Kingsford Opoku-Gyamfi, commended the service providers in the area for their collaboration with the management of the scheme to offer quality health services delivery in the district.

Mr Opoku-Gyamfi outlined improper network connectivity and delay in provider services to clients as some of the challenges that affected the scheme’s 2015 registration exercise.

He said they could only register 68,000 people that represented 57 percent of their target.

Mr Opoku-Gyamfi announced that management had targeted 100,000 people for the 2016 client registration exercise, saying they had organised the necessary logistics to make the exercise successful.

Nkoranza North District Deputy Coordinating Director, James Kwame Adams, commended the management and staff of the scheme for their hardwork and efforts for the sustainability of the programme.
