Stanbic Bank has made a critical intervention in healthcare delivery in the country with the donation of three infant incubators and three phototherapy machines to the Ghana Medical Association.
The medical equipment, valued at GHS 500,000, were officially handed over to GMA executives at a presentation ceremony held at the GMA Secretariat, located within the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra. This donation is expected to improve neonatal care and contribute to better health outcomes for infants across the country.
Speaking at the handing over ceremony, the Head of Personal and Private Banking at Stanbic Bank Ghana, Ben Mensah, spoke on the motivation for the donation. He said, “Today is a proud moment for all of us at Stanbic Bank. This donation is not just about equipment, but about giving hope to families.
Many of history’s greatest minds, like Albert Einstein, were born prematurely, and today we are making sure babies that are born pre-term have the chance to thrive. For us at Stanbic Bank, our commitment to corporate social responsibility goes beyond financial inclusion, it extends to health, education, and community development.” Ben Mensah further thanked the GMA for their dedication to healthcare delivery, especially for their commitment to advancing neonatal care in the country.
Receiving the donation, Dr. Frank Serebour, President of the Ghana Medical Association, expressed gratitude on behalf of the association. He noted, “Today is both a solemn and hopeful occasion. As someone who works closely with children, I see firsthand the critical need for incubators. Too often, we are forced to refer cases to other facilities because of a lack of essential equipment. Sadly, the distance of these referrals sometimes discourages families from seeking the urgent care their babies need, often with tragic results.”
Dr. Serebour emphasized the importance of corporate partnerships in addressing these gaps, stating, “Stanbic Bank’s donation is a lifeline, not only for the infants whose lives will be saved but for our medical community as a whole. This kind of support sets a powerful precedent for future collaborations. We are truly grateful, and today fills me with hope for the many children in need of this critical care.”
Richard Asare, Head of Private Sector Banking at Stanbic Bank, reiterated the bank’s commitment to supporting vital sectors such as healthcare. He remarked, “We view this donation as part of our responsibility to alleviate suffering in society. We deeply appreciate the doctors who dedicate their lives to saving others and the invaluable impact they make on our communities. We stand ready to support you in any way we can. Thank you for the remarkable work you continue to do.”
The donation to the GMA forms part of Stanbic Bank’s ongoing efforts to support the well-being of the communities the bank serves. In the first half of 2024, the bank invested a substantial GHS924,279 in health and wellness initiatives across Ghana. These initiatives included the planting of 4,500 trees nationwide, the payment of medical bills for mothers at LEKMA Hospital’s maternity ward, and covering surgery and treatment costs for several patients.
Additionally, the bank supported hospital infrastructural development and organized community workshops to educate young girls on sexual reproductive health. These efforts have not only improved the quality of life in these communities but have also contributed to sustainable development by promoting health and reducing disparities. Several GMA executives, including Vice President Prof. Ernest Yorke and General Secretary Dr. (Dent) Richard Selormey, were also present at the event.
