Government has directed the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) to conduct a nation-wide inspection of all markets to ensure that all electrical installations in such places meet their approval.
A statement signed by Mr Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Deputy Minister for Information and Media Relations, copied to the Ghana News Agency, said the ECG is expected to begin the exercise immediately as illegal connections have been identified as one of the main causes of fires in the markets.
It said government has also directed the security agencies to coordinate with the management of the ECG to apprehend and prosecute any person or group of people found to have engaged in illegal electrical connections in the markets.
The statement said the directives form part of measures by the government to curb the recent spate of fire outbreaks in markets around the country.
It said government would adopt all measures necessary to prevent the further outbreak of fires in our markets.
The statement, however, urged the public and those operating in the markets to also remain vigilant and careful with naked fires, electrical equipment and electrical connections in their stalls.
