Police in the Upper East Regional capital, Bolgatanga say a one year old baby abandoned in the house of the second suspect in the acid attack on the New Patriotic Party (NPP) regional chairman, Adams Mahama has been sent to the Bolgatanga children’s home.
Police spokesman in the region, ASP Thomas Agbanyo told the media that parents of the baby took to their heels leaving the toddler behind.
Contrary to reports that the suspect had escaped with his wife after committing the crime, ASP Agbanyo said the suspect left his wife and the baby in the house where police discovered a gallon of concentrated acid.
The woman, according to police only escaped and left the baby behind after police called to question her about the whereabouts of her husband.
He said they took custody of the child and were later informed that the house had caught fire.
It was not yet clear who or what caused the fire but neighbours were able to douse the fire, ASP Agbanyo said.
Meanwhile, the ASP disclosed that death threats received by some NPP executives in the region had necessitated an increase in security in the area.
He said some executives of the party had already fled the town due to the threats but the police will ensure that those who are still there are protected.
He indicated that the police will embark on regular patrols in the town to avert anything untoward from happening.
