The Chief Justice, Sophia Akuffo, has reiterated the need to decongest the country’s prisons.
According to her, the situation whereby suspects are locked up, and in most instances, their cases are not heard, must stop.
She was speaking at a ‘Justice For All’ outreach programme at the Tamale Central Prison in the Northern Region.
Ms. Sophia Akuffo noted that the ‘Justice For All’ initiative is a move to decongest the prisons.
The chief justice said remand is not a regular activity under the justice administration system, as such, the practice of judges remanding suspected criminals must be minimized.
The initiative is intended to free inmates who have been wrongly convicted and also to bring closure to cases involving remand inmates.
Ms. Sophia Akuffo has given the assurance that his outfit would ensure quality and equal justice for all Ghanaians.
The chief justice commended her predecessor, Georgina Theodora Wood, for her commitment to the ‘Justice For All’ programme because it was during her tenure that the programme started.
