Rose Shabi, a pregnant inmate of the Ho Female Prisons has been saved from delivering her child in the Prisons after Dr. Archibald Yao Letsa, Volta Regional Minister paid her fine of GH¢1,500.00.
Shabi, 18 years, in May 2018 failed to pay a GH¢1,500.00 fine slapped on her by the Magistrate Court for physically assaulting a cousin of hers during a quarrel, and got a default sentence of six months imprisonment.
After serving two and half months of her sentence, she made an appeal to the President, Nana Akufo-Addo for clemency for the sake of her unborn child, as the Prisons lacked child-friendly facilities.
The Regional Minister said he was moved when he read about the plight of the teenager in the media hence his gesture.
“After reading the story, I was quite sad. This was not brought to our attention earlier. So this morning I organized myself and dashed to the female prison and made available the amount involved which is GH¢1,500.00 to the Officer in Charge of the Prisons, to pay the fine at the Court, so that this young lady can have her freedom,” Dr Letsa said.
Mr Sewoenam Abotchie, Public Relations Officer, Ho Central Prisons told the Ghana News Agency the Service would go through the processes for the release of Shabi.
