A defiant robber met his untimely death at about 2:30 a.m. in Accra, yesterday, when he engaged in a fierce shootout with the police.
In the company of two others, they attempted to raid a house at East Legon in Accra but he was shot in the hand and left side of the belly when he defied police orders and fired in the direction of the police.
According to the police, there were three suspected armed robbers but two of them took to their heels while one of them, whose name is still unknown, was killed when he engaged the police in a gun battle.
His bullet ridden body, which left his shirt and parts of his jeans trousers soaked with blood, was on display at the Accra Regional Police Command but the crowd which trooped to the premises to catch a glimpse of the body could not understand why he had ladies beads around his waist.
It left a number of the spectators wondering if he was gay or it was a form of protection.
Later, one of the robbers who tried to evade the police was arrested and is expected to be put before court soon.
The police patrol team from the Accra Regional Police Command which moved in swiftly after the police information room received a distress call rescued the victims who had been ordered to lie down.
Commissioner of Police (COP) Patrick Timbilla, the Accra Police Commander briefing journalists later in the day noted that the robbers, armed with pump action guns succeeded in dispossessing the victims of GH2,000.00 and two mobile phones.
Police acted swiftly and proceeded to East Legon to rescue the victims. The robbers on seeing the police opened fire on them. Police returned fire and one of the robbers fell dead in the process, said COP Timbilla.
He noted that the police were employing all measures to apprehend the other robber who managed to escape.
The other robbers associated with the crime are currently on the run with police in pursuit, he added.
The Accra Police Commander stated that the police retrieved the two mobile phones, eight live cartridges and four spent empty cartridges from the scene of the crime.
On how the police arrested one of the robbers who tried to avoid arrest, COP Timbilla said the victims spotted the suspect while they were on their way to make a formal complaint at the Legon Police Station and quickly informed the police.
The suspect was later identified as Richard Kwakye.
Upon interrogation he mentioned he is the leader of the gang who earlier robbed the victims. The victim claimed he was holding the pump action gun during the robbery and ordered them to lie down and after investigation he would be arraigned before court, he said.
The Regional Commander stated that police would continue to throw light on the importance of vigilance and sharing of information on the fight against crime and urged the public to be security conscious.
