Madam Felicia Okai, Tema Metropolitan Assistant Director of Education, has called for the revival of basic education in the harbour and industrial metropolis to regain its pre-eminence in Education.
According to her, Temas 49th position on the Ghana districts basic education league was not good enough for a metropolis which has one of the best collections of educational facilities in the country.
Mrs Okai, who was addressing a workshop on the role of government and civil society organisations in education delivery, attended by students, social activists, journalists, educationists among others in Tema, said it was ironic that deprived districts are doing better than resource rich metropolis like Tema.
The one day workshop which was organised by IDAY Ghana and Abibimman Foundation, a development oriented non-governmental organisation coincided with the commemoration of the day of the African Child.
Mr Okai asked parents to make time and resources available to their children as they struggle through a rather complex period when exploitation and abuse are on the rise.
She said heterosexual and homosexual relationships were on the rise at the basic level and warned that if parents and teachers do not cooperate to give moral guidance to children, the future would be bleak for many.
Many young people at the basic level are being lured into despicable acts by those who highlight the pleasure side of it but the reality is that there are more negatives including diseases, low self-esteem and many social problems which are never told.
Mr Okai said the internet and television are been misapplied in the lives of most youths and asked that the basic simple things like reading and debating issues should resurface in schools.
When we were growing up, we talked about African Writers Series and other scholarly issues but now telenovelas are what most children know and understand. They stay on the internet for hours accessing sites that are known for corrupt practices, she said
