The US Embassy in Ghana has denied the claim that its government has entered an agreement to establish a military base in Ghana.
In a statement Tuesday, the Embassy said there is an agreement known as Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA) between both countries dating back to 1998.
But the 20-year-old deal does not cover the "current range and volume of bilateral exercise and assistance," it said.
Joy News has intercepted a document which revealed Cabinet has approved an agreement to allow the US military an unrestricted access to a host of Ghanaian facilities and wide-ranging tax exemptions.
The deal will permit the U.S. military to use Ghana as a base for staging and deploying forces. But Defence Minister, Dominic Nitiwul, has denied reports that the agreement covers the establishment of a military base.
“The United States of America is not establishing a military base in Ghana, at all…it is not true and they do not intend to do that, not at all.” He said the US military has only asked to make use of some facilities at the Kotoka International Airport (KIA) and the Tema Port to keep their cargo and other materials they may use during their stay in the country.
He was clear, a portion of the agreement reported in the media is a blatant misrepresentation and was engineered to cause panic among the citizenry.
Reacting to the report, the US Embassy in Ghana said there is only a planned security exercise between militaries of the two countries that will require some access to certain facilities. But there is no such plan to establish a permanent military base or bases in Ghana, the Embassy said.
“This year, the US is investing over $20 million in training and equipment for the Ghanaian armed for4ces. Ghana is also once again preparing to train US forces – as it did in 2017,” it said.

America and the whites always have a strategy to do what they do , its just Trump trying to cement his grounds and know the activities which goes on here and other African countries . What do you think will happen ? Another Iraq in the making coz most African countries will hate us for giving them grounds to establish a BASE. We automatically become an enemy too. This is what breeds terrorism , if you want a base why don't u do that on high seas no mans land . If someone gives me 10 Million dollars i will shake our leaders for them to sit up in parliament coz all they do is drink tea, ***barred word*** talk and not long term vision and how to develop what they will leave behind for their kids ,grandkids and generations of our motherland. Remember ***barred word*** Politician when you steal million of dollars and make properties for your kids and generation , the poor that u stole from will be poor and these same community breeds criminals that will rise to be arm robbers and killers to which you or your kids can be a victim anytime coz '' karma is a real biiiiich '' There is a saying we always pay for our sins or our kids kids will pay for it . We are making our own bed and we sleep in it . We will be very sorry should something Really bad happen here coz we are surrounded by french speaking countries who don't like the Americas. God blezz GHANA
These countries are developed before bases built. Anything US touches gets into ruins. 3y3 as3m ooo
Note that there are 800 named US bases around the world and most if not all do very well. Canada, Germany(34 bases), Italy(3) UK, Japan(7bases) etc all have US bases. Yes, there are always pros can cons here but I believe the pros outweighs the cons in this case.
You better don't bring your arrs here! You overthrew our visionary Dr Nkrumah in order to impoverish us.No government after him has been able to map out a clear development agenda and vision for this country. Even legacy projects he left they have not been able to maintain! It's just one corruption scandal after another between npp and ndc.Ghana has become a pendulum of failure and confusion swinging between these two parties. All they do is trade accusations and counter accusations at one another after steeling from us!
EIII, SO SOON? NOT EVEN A WEEK THAT WE HAVE BEEN HAILING THE SLOGAN "GHANA BEYOND AID" WE ARE AREADY FINDING EXCUSES TO ATTRACT AID. GHANA FOR YOU. DIFFICULT TO COMPREHEND. NOT SO?
