Assin Central lawmaker Kennedy Agyapong has posed a direct question to a woman – who recently made a desperate call on President Nana Akufo-Addo to intervene in the Menzgold imbroglio – whether she shared the profits she made from the same investment, during the good times, with the president, for which reason she now desires his intervention to recover her GHS760,000 locked-up capital.
“I heard a woman say she invested GHS760,000 at Menzgold and voted for Nana Akufo-Addo while she was pregnant and, so, President Akufo-Addo should intervene so that she can get her investment back from Menzgold.
“Did you share the Menzgold profits you enjoyed with Akufo-Addo when things were hunky-dory?” Mr Agyapong asked.
He continued: “Sometimes people behave in very perplexing ways in this country”, explaining that: “Whenever people’s greed for money backfires, then they turn their guns on the politician”, adding: “It’s not proper”.
“There’s no law that says Akufo-Addo can use force to reclaim your locked-up investments”, he said while speaking about a totally separate issue involving a pastor who is alleged to be scamming his constituents at Assin Fosu.
“Unless you take him [Nana Appiah Mensah, CEO of Menzgold] to court, you won’t have your investment back”, he advised the estimated 1.8 million clients whose deposits have been locked up with the company since August 2018 when the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) ordered the investment firm to halt its operations over regulatory infractions.
Prior to that, the Bank of Ghana and the SEC has issued several warnings to the public to desist from doing business with Menzgold, since, according to the regulators, the company was not licensed for deposit-taking.
Just last week, some of the investors thronged the Dzorwulu office of Menzgold to demonstrate as part of measures to pile pressure on the government to intervene on their behalf.
It was during that demonstration that this desperate mother-of-three warned that people will die in Ghana if the president does not speak on the matter.
“If the president doesn’t speak concerning this issue, we are going to die. The president has to talk. He has to say something. Do something about the situation. Not for them to protect this man [Nana Appiah Mensah]. We need our monies. My money alone is 7.6 billion old currency [GHS760,000]. I cannot leave that money for this man [Nana Appiah Mensah] to spend it.
“I have three kids that I have to take care of. What about their fees? Is my children’s future going to be a waste just because of this man [Nana Appiah Mensah]? How come? They should have done something from the beginning. “We wouldn’t have gone in by now, so, we need them to speak and do something about it.
“The president should come out because I voted for him. When I was pregnant, I voted for that man and he has to speak. If he doesn’t speak, concerning this issue, what will happen in Ghana here, it will not contain all of us”.

They can use SEC to collapse the business but they cannot use EOCO, another govt agency to get the man arrested so he pays back people's monies to them? So criminals can go scot free in this country whiles the innocent who invested there lose their monies?
Behold the wisdom of our leaders! Is Akuffo Addo not the president of Ghana? So anyone can get up and defraud citizens like this and the leaders we voted for cannot ensure justice is done for the citizens? They can use SEC to collapse the business but they cannot use EOCO, another govt agency to get the man arrested so he pays back people's monies to them? So criminals can go scot free in this country whiles the innocent who invested there lose their monies? This seems to be the order of the day in this funny country. Well, if things don't change, we will all create some of these companies very soon. And also get monies from people. We get licence for one thing. Then go beyond it and make it sound nice, then later when regulators come people's monies are already with us then we spend it outside Ghana. Since nothing will be done to us to get back people's monies for them by whichever government in power. Weak country. Weak laws. Weak and shallow leaders. A government that doesn't care about its citizens and adding insult to our injury that we are greedy. Is minerals commission not a govt institution that gave them licence to do so? When they went beyond their licence long ago what was SEC doing? Were they asleep? Must it take databank boss to be sent to SEC before they started to act? And what about all those implicit endorsements from NanaAddo, Ohene, Chief Immam, Ex Prez K4, the ministry and others? So u were all part of the deception to take people's monies from us that's why nothing is being done to NAM1?? it's very clear. God bless you all. You will all get your results very soon!!
I get so disappointed when I hear a so called senior legislator talk this way. Of course I don't expect customers of menzgold to be paid with tax payers' monies, that will be an unreasonable ask!! Were customers of menzgold greedy like a senior minister said? Maybe they were, maybe for some it was a case of pure ignorance and for others it may also be that they knew the risks and yet decided to go into it anyway. But what you're failing to realise is that none of these reasons are illegal. As far as I know there are no laws in the country against greed nor are there laws against unreasonable risks with ones personal finances. There are laws however, against the operating of illegal businesses with legally mandated bodies to regulate and supervise business activities in all business sectors. Are the duties of these legal entities to warn the public and fold their arms?? So is Mr. Agyapong saying it is less of a murder if I ignore a warning not to go to a dangerous area and I go there and get murdered?? Is the perpetrator of such an act any less a murderer?? Legally mandated state entities failed in this menzgold issue and they should also be held accountable. This NAM guy committed a crime least of which is the operating of an illegal business and he must face the laws of the land pure and simple!! As a legislature being paid with tax payers monies I expect you to think through these issues and enact laws to protect citizens even when they are being ***barred word*** and at their most vulnerable. That is the essence of statehood and you as a legislator are one of the people that is tasked with these responsibilities. So these and many other issues are what should occupy your thoughts instead of making infantile statements in public. I rest my case!!
KENNEDY AGYAPONG IS RIGHT ON THIS. I DO NOT UNDERSTAND SOME PEOPLE. WHERE ON EARTH WILL ANYBODY BE ABLE TO OFFER SUCH A OUTRAGEOUS RETURNS ON YOUR INVESTMENTS. IT IS MERE GREED AND LAZINESS THAT WILL MAKE ANY BODY FALL FOR SUCH BAIT. WHAT KIND OF WORK AT ALL WERE THE INVESTORS EXPECTING MENZGOLD TO PUT THEIR INVESTMENTS TO FOR THE TO GIVE THAT KIND RETURNS, COVER THEIR COST AND MAKE SOME PROFITS. IF SHE WANTS HER MONEY BACK, SHE SHOULD GO COURT AND LEAVE THE PRESIDENT OUT OF IT. I AM APPALLED BY PEOPLE WHO SENT THEIR HARD EARNED MONEY TO MENZGOLD.
