One mania that characterized the selection of a flagbearer for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), during its last General Congress in December 2007, was the infamous insulting text messages about potential flagbearers, principally Nana Akuffo Addo and Alan Kyeremanteng.
Many political pundits attributed the defeat of the NPP largely to this phenomenon, as the then opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) capitalized on the bad press.
And one would have thought that the NPP had learnt some useful lessons from this.
Sadly, however, credible information pieced together by PEACEFM News reveal that the practice has raised its ugly head again sending dreadful signals to NPP faithfuls, with some even wondering how power could be regained if the practice persists.
Below is a text just received by one NPP stalwart, Maxwell Kofi Jumah, MP for Asokwa, in the Ashanti Region. Quote:
“J A Kufuor’s legacy to Ashanti NPP- criminals and fraudsters – Yaw Amankwa, Adu Asabre, Kofi Ghana, Asare Bediako, Owusu Ansah. Kofi Ghana, a social security fraudster in America, Owusu Ansah took 10% on all contracts executed under his Ministership. Ei, Kofi Diewuo’s legacy to Ashanti NPP. Hmmm” Unquote.
Speaking in an interview with PEACEFM [email protected], Hon. Maxwell Kofi Jumah strongly held that the text was generated from the camp of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC). He uncharitably asserted that the source of the text must have his mental faculties critically examined by psychiatrist.
“It’s funny, but i firmly believe it emanated from the NDC, I don’t want to think an NPP activist can engage in this…if you carefully read through the contents of the message… and if you are indeed a stick-in-the-mud NPP member, you will not say such things about (Ex-Prez) Kufuor…I don’t assume an NPP member who is in his right frame of mind would engage in this… Such a person needs to be sent to Pantang…if it’s an NPP member, Ankaful (Psychiatric Hospital) is the place best suited for him,” he declared.
The former Deputy Minister for Local Gov’t in the NPP administration stressed that such practice does not augur well for intra-party growth and must be outrightly condemned should it happen in any other political party.
“In democracy, as in every game, there are rules and regulations…even in boxing, the noble art of self-defence, there are rules…so if you are in politics and don’t adhere to these rules, and just throw your legs about haphazardly like a camel, then you don’t deserve to be in politics…whether you are an NDC or a CPP sympathizer, or any of the political parties, you don’t engage in this kind of politics. It means you’ve stooped too low,” he added.
Whiles acknowledging that there are indeed Alan and Akufo Addo factions in the NPP, Mr. Jumah resolutely argued that current happenings cannot be attributed to the factionalism within the party.
