The New Patriotic Party (NPP) National Executives Council (NEC) has been told to apply stiffer sanctions against members who flout party laws. This would help bring discipline and maintain unity which is very crucial if the party wants to unseat the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the next polls.

A statement issued by Volunteer Media Communicator (VMC), made up of NPP serial callers in the Ashanti region said the confusion that rocked the party’s recent polling station elections indicates the party needs discipline. The statement was jointly signed by Osei Dapaah Hayford aka ‘Sir Fax’ and Eric Wiafe popularly called ‘Kwame NP,’ Chairman and Vice Chairman respectively.

It noted that the party leadership should sanction any member irrespective of his or her status if his or her actions are found creating rancor among the rank and file of the elephant family.

The VMC expressed concern over media reports that a rift exists between the party’s 2008 flagbearer Nana Akufo-Addo and Alan Kyeremanteng, one of the presidential aspirants. It noted NPP would struggle to unseat NDC in 2012 if indeed such a friction exists between two leading personalities who command colossal backing in the party.

The VMC thus charged Nana Addo and Mr. Kyeremanteng to come out immediately with a statement debunking the perception there is bad blood between them to help deepen the party’s unity. It also urged those propagating the Nana Addo and Alan factions to desist from doing so, reminding them they were all vying for one thing which is to win political power in 2012.

The statement also noted that though it is permissible for individuals in the party to air their views on issues pertaining in the party they should not make unguarded remarks which could jeopardize the party’s peace and unity. It commended the party leadership for proposing an early date for congress, stating it would help the NPP mend its cracks and get enough time to market its flagbearer ahead of the polls.

The VMC commended former President Kufuor and Peter Mac Manu, NPP Chairman for admonishing party faithfuls to embrace peace and unity as they prepare to face the next elections.
