The Dismissed Director-General of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) Mr. Willam Ampem-Darko, is back into full-time politics.

He was recently spotted moving with the Flagbearer of the opposition New Patriotic Party, Nana Akufo-Addo, who was in the Eastern Regional capital Koforidua, as part of his party’s “all hands on deck tour”, which seeks to patch up post-parliamentary primary differences ahead of election 2012.

Mr. Ampem Darko, before joining the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) was the Chairman of the NPP’s Finance Committee in the Eastern Region.

He also contested the Kade parliamentary primary in 2004, but lost to the incumbent MP Hon. Ofosu Asamoah.

He once ‘boasted out of anger at Adansi-Asokwa MP, K.T. Hammond, that he could stand as an Independent candidate in the Kade Constituency and win the seat with ease.

His outburst was in reaction to a supposed disparaging comment the MP had made about him that appeared to undermine his capabilities as the then Director-General of the State Broadcaster.

But in an interview with Citi News’ Eastern Regional Correspondent in Koforidua, Mr. Ampem-Darko noted that he would not want to lose his status as a loyal member of the NPP, by going to contest the Kade seat as an Independent candidate.

“As a disciplined member of the NPP, I don’t want to flout any regulations. The Chairman of the party has stated categorically that anyone who goes independent wouldn’t be given the opportunity to rejoin the party so I don’t have any intention to go independent and I have never had the intention before” he noted.

Mr. Ampem-Darko told Citi News’ Francis Appiah-Kubi, that he remains a committed member of the NPP despite his outburst against the Member of Parliament for Adansi-Asokwa, Hon. K.T. Hammond.

According to him, he was “extremely provoked” to react in that manner, given the reason that some members of the NPP were attacking him because they claimed he was favouring the ruling NDC.

The Former GBC Boss said he was serious about contesting the Kade seat as an independent candidate, but abandoned the idea later.

Mr. Ampem-Darko says he will serve the party at the Constituency, Regional and at the national level when called upon, to recapture power for the NPP in 2012. According to him, he still maintains a good rapport with the incumbent MP Ofosu Asamoah, regardless of the fact that in 2004, there was a stalemate in the primary that elected him.

He said in 2004, he went ahead to support Mr. Asamoah’s campaign with his personal resources.

He said the NPP with hard work, will retain the Kade seat in 2012 and go ahead to win the Presidential election, rubbishing suggestions that the party’s chances had dwindled.
