President John Dramani Mahama was on Thursday officially elected flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) after securing 99.5% of total votes cast at the party's Special National Delegates Congress held at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi.
He polled 2767 out of the 2781 total votes cast.
In all, 14 delegates voted No, meaning they object to President Mahama becoming the flag bearer of the NDC in the upcoming polls.
Eleven ballots were declared invalid in the election supervised by the Electoral Commission.
President Mahama was the only candidate to vie for the flagbearership position after he was nominated by the National Executive Committee of the party a few days into his role as president. Following the death of President Mills and subsequent swearing in of Mr Mahama as President, the NEC, acknowledged him as leader of the party, but as per demands of the NDC constitution, he had to officially file his nomination and present himself for selection by a special delegates Congress.
His endorsement was by a secret ballot of more than 2000 delegates from across the country.
The party founder, national executives and all the delegates from the ten regions, exercised their franchise at the congress grounds
He is expected to give his acceptance speech at a rally to formally launch the the partys national campaign at the Jubilee Park later on Thursday.
