The National Democratic Congress (NDC) is leaving no stone unturned to capture all the seats in the Volta Region.
In line with this, the party has intensified its campaign with the coming of the Chief of Staff, Mr Julius Debrah, to the region barely some days after the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flag bearer, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, ended his tour of the region.
The Chief of Staff and his entourage have begun a five-day campaign tour of the region just a fortnight after President John Dramani Mahama had conducted a similar campaign in northern Volta.
His objetives to intensify the NDC campaign and also to interrogate some issues that came up during the President’s tour and attempt to address them.
According to the itinerary, Mr Debrah would be at Peki Tsiame, Have, Vakpo, Breawniase (Nkwanta South), Poase Cement (Akan Constituency), Hohoe Zongo and Kpeve.
Visit stirs controversy
In an interview with the Daily Graphic, the Regional Organiser of the NPP and Director of Operation for the 2016 presidential and parliamentary campaign, Mr Makafui Woanya, said the Chief of Staff’s tour is ‘’a sign of panic in the NDC because the people are deserting them.’’
“The Chief of Staff’s visit is to do damage control. They know they have not done much for the people. Realising that they are losing numbers, they are coming back to test the ground and do a re-assessment of NDC’s chances in the region”, he said.
He thanked the chiefs and people of the region for a successful campaign tour of Nana Akufo-Addo.
Response
Responding to the NPP’s claim, the NDC Regional Organiser, Mr Henry Ametepe, said, ‘‘There is nothing damaged in the region for which the Chief of Staff is coming to correct.”
‘’They (NPP) will not win a seat in the region. We are doing our campaign and let them also do their campaign, for we will all know who emerges winner after December 7,’’ the regional organiser declared.
According to him, this is an election year and everybody is allowed to do his or her campaign, moreover, the NDC is not frightened about the numbers that came out to welcome Nana Akufo-Addo because ‘‘we should not forget that they had about 100,000 votes in the last election and, therefore, would certainly have supporters in the region’’.
Mr Ametepe said the number of supporters on Nana Akufo-Addo’s tour ‘’was less than 100,000’’, which rather went to confirm that their votes were reducing.
