The Minority Leader in Parliament, Mr Haruna Iddrisu has condemned government’s decision to dissolve the governing council of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) and called on President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to rescind the decision with immediate effect.
According to Mr Iddrisu the move is a threat to academic freedom in the country and also undermines the respect of the management of the institution.
Making reference to the 1992 constitution which he argued guaranteed the freedom of all public universities in terms of policy decisions, he said failure on the part of the President to reconstitute the Council would amount to a constitutional breach.
“There are better ways to manage the situation than what the President did. I request him to desist from extending his hands to undermine the academic freedom of our public universities.”
“The same thing was done at the University of Education, Winneba. The over politicization of our academic institutions will not help the development of our country. We, therefore, solidarise with the workers of the university that council be properly created in accordance with law,“ he stated.
Mr Iddrisu was addressing delegates at the NDC’s National Women and Youth Conference at Gomoa, Fetteh in the Central Region on Saturday.

As the leader of the opposition, you cannot just say there better ways of handling the issue concerning the university council. Put those better ways forward for people to evaluate and make their judgement. You are only talking for talking sake. You and your party members should continue to oppose the good policies the government put in place, come 2020 the masses will decide.
Nana Addo is hopelessss! He's acting like a Coke addict. No President has ever betrayed Ghanaians like Nana Addo. You did not write in your manifesto that you were going to borrow senselesslyy and take orders from IMF and through that impose unimaginable taxes on us. Nana Addo is hopelesslyy hopelesss.
Although I am an ardent supporter of the President and the Vice, I am appalled by the bad advise given leading to the dissolution of the KNUST Council. For once I agree with the call by the Minority Leader. Govt. should de-escalate rather than deepen the problems at KNUST by restoring the dissolved Council and change its nominees to the Council if it so wishes. Simply seek the intervention of the Chancellor of KNUST (Otumfuo, the Asantehene)to use his influence and good offices to bring parties together and help them look for amicable and workable solutions. By the way, who is going to pay for the damage caused by the rampaging students? Nobody seems to want to talk about that.
