Constituency Chairman of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has accused the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) of votes buying ahead of the by-elections at the Ayawaso West Wuogon constituency.
Bismarck Aborbi Ayitey claims constituents are being handed $100 to vote with many including members of the NDC benefitting from the freebies in question.
“Our people also benefitted because we want to prove a point and truly, they came back with the dollars,” he added.
The race for the Ayawaso West by-elections is heating up as the NDC and NPP battle it out for the seat which became vacant following the sudden demise of the Member of Parliament for the area, Emmanuel Kyerematen Agyarko.
NPP’s candidate and widow of the late MP, Lydia Alhassan, is hoping to retain the seat but NDC candidate, Delali Brempong is hoping to make history by snatching the seat from the ruling party.
Speaking on Asempa FM Wednesday, Bismarck Aborbi Ayitey said the NDC would pull a surprise in the by-elections. He said constituents were calling for change after several years under the NPP without development.
The NDC Ayawaso West Wougon Chairman accused the NPP of using what he described as their usual undemocratic tactics to entice voters in the by-election.
In spite of the clandestine moves of the NPP, Mr Aborbi Ayitey said the NDC will win the by-elections.
