Former President John Dramani Mahama has condemned the violent attacks and intimidation of supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Thursday’s by-election in the Ayawaso West constituency in Accra.
Mr Mahama described the unfortunate development as “a sad day for Ghana’s democracy”.
The governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), unleashed terror and violence on supporters of the NDC at the residence of its parliamentary candidate, Mr Delali Kwasi Brempong with several rounds of ammunition fired into his residence.
The Member of Parliament for Ningo-Prampram, Hon. Samuel George, was also brutally assaulted by pro-government vigilante forces.
Elsewhere in the constituency, masked gunmen clothed in police uniforms, armed to the teeth and riding in military grade vehicles violated supporters and members of the NDC, injuring scores of them.
Addressing delegates of the NDC in the Adaklu constituency as part of his flagbearership campaign tour of the Volta Region, Mr Mahama said “it is unacceptable that a by-election is characterised by such violence and intimidation with many of our comrades brutalised and injured”.
He warned that as a democratic party, the NDC would resist any attempt by the Akufo-Addo government to subvert Ghana’s constitution as it happened during Thursday’s by-election.
Mr Mahama is suspending his tour to return to Accra to visit the victims of the NPP’s rampaging thugs.
For his part, the Member of Parliament for Adaklu, Mr Kwame Agbodza also expressed outrage at what happened in the Ayawaso West Wuogon constituency.

SO MAHAMA HAS SO SOON FORGETTEN TOLONSI BYE ELECTIONS? THAT DAY WAS NOT A BAD DAY FOR GHANA BUT AFTER THEIR AZORKA BOYS HAS BEEN PUT AT THEIR PROPER PLACE, HE IS CRYING FOUL. IF YOU GUYS LIKE TRY SOMETHING IN 2020, THAT WILL BE THE END OF NDC.
Sam George you are even lucky, I think you should even thank your God for just two slaps. someone lost his eyes on just going to demonstrate his right about elections process. next time you will think twice when in power position has changed.
These developments are bad but have Mahama and George asked who started them? Thugs seizing public toilets, tolling boothd, lorry stations, Azorkor boys beating and terrorizing people? This needs to stop. Parties need to put such youth to good use than being vigilantes. I mean both NPP and NDC or 2020 will be bloodier. Is this what we want? The youth should know politicians are using them and if they get hurt or die in their operations, it is on them. This is common sense.
Ah ! Mahama paaa, sad day for Ghanaian democracy b3n? Why play dey your eyes so? Common analysis too, you be 1nc0mpetent? A f-00-1 in your party gets a deserving slap, the h00dlum azorka boys' plans to disrupt the elections curbed before it could see the light of day. And because of this failure you make such statement? I will always be disappointed in you. Oh ! NDC. you now have 1mmature drama queens in parliament and as your communicators, a $hame1ess old l1a-r as your gen. secretary and a young 1ying comms director. Top it up with the most d1shonest christian and church elder as your chairman. I now get it when JDM says What a sad day for Ghanaian democracy. What possible credible clean challenge can the NDC offer the NPP. Long may you drown in opposition.
Please advice your boys to cool down else you will be disgraced come 2020. I remember Tain, 2008, when NPP saw that they come not win the election they didn't go there at all.President Kuffour called his party members at Wenchi and told them that they would not contest. They didn't go to the constituency to cause commotion.Note also that it is incumbent on you the opposition also to ensure peace. That kind of politics of who can talk loud is fading. Fiifi Kotey,Sir John, Asiedu Nketia eras have past. I want to advice it is better to concentrate on your vision than opposition shortfall.
THE AZOKA BOYS HAD BEEN BROUGHT FOR WIDESPREAD DISRUPTION OF THE BY-ELECTION. THEY WOULD HAVE GONE VIRAL TO THE POLLING STATIONS TO ATTACK PEOPLE AND SNATCH BALLOT BOXES. THE STORY AT THE END OF THE DAY WOULD HAVE BEEN COMPLETELY DIFFERENT FROM WHAT WE SEE NOW. THE ELECTION WOULD HAVE BECOME FIASCO. THE INTELLIGENCE ON THE GROUND INDICATES THAT THEY COULD HAVE BEEN NO ELECTION AS SOME IN NDC HAD WISHED AND PLANNED TO DO. THE SECURITY FORCES PICKED THE PLAN AND HAD TO MOVE FAST IN THE MORNING TO FOIL THE DIABOLIC PLAN. THEIR ACTION MIGHT APPEAR BIZARRE BUT IT WAS NECESSARY FOR THE SECURITY FORCES TO ACT IMMEDIATELY TO SAVE THE ELECTION AND LIVES OF INNOCENT PEOPLE WHO WOULD HAVE BECOME VICTIMS TO THE EVIL AGENDA IF IT HAD NOT BEEN NIP IN THE BUD.
Yes, it is a sad day for democracy indeed for the dirty tricks and the propaganda of the NDC! Tell your men to act like disciplined and matured people and stop the violent politics you do. Let us save Ghana for peace.
This is definitely alcohol inspired talk. He's always drunk on platforms and keeps spewing garrrrbagge.
Annoying dea.d go.a.t
What kind of jaundiced and one-sided report is this? This an unfortunate piece of journalism. Disgraceful to say the least.
