Maame Yaa Aboagye, Deputy Communications Director of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), says the just-ended voter registration exercise is the most “successful and transparent” ever in the history of the country.
She applauded the Electoral Commission (EC) for its constant engagement with the electoral stakeholders updating them on the progress of the exercise.
“NPP’s position has always been clean and transparent voter register and I can boldly say the exercise has been the best so far in terms of the conduct of EC officials and citizens amidst COVID-19 pandemic. We all know that we are not in normal times but with one accord we were able to follow all protocols to make sure that we are all safe. Kudos to us all. In fact, the exercise has been smooth, peaceful, transparent, and highly successful,” she said.
She also rubbished the NDC’s assertion that the compilation of the new voters’ register was unnecessary.
A total of 16.9 million citizens registered their names during the 38-day voter registration exercise to put together a new voter register.
The total number, which exceeded the Commission’s 15 million eligible voters’ target by 1.9 million, was also slightly higher than the 16.8 million in the old register.
A breakdown shows that the new register captured 1.3 million first-time voters.
