A former New Patriotic Party (NPP) constituency chairman for Fomena, Akwasi Nti Asamoah, has urged elders of the party to draw up a gentleman's agreement between the two major presidential hopefuls of the party.
The NPP is yet to decide on who leads the party in the 2024 elections. Even though other candidates have expressed their interest, the main contenders seem to be Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and Minister for Trade and Industry Alan Kyerematen
Supporters of Alan K were hoping that their candidate will lead the party following a gentleman's agreement between him and then-candidate Akufo-Addo.
But that cannot be since the Bawumia camp are set to fiercely oppose it, evidenced in the recent social media post authored by Spokesperson for the Vice-President, Dr Gideon Boako. To say that post kicked up a storm of controversy cannot be overemphasised.
Meanwhile, supporters of Alan K have been crying foul over what they describe as unfair treatment and witch-hunting from some top-hierarchy members in the party.
Speaking in an interview on Neat FM’s Me Man Nti programme, Akwasi Nti says to avoid heated confrontations in the party, there should be a gentleman’s agreement between Mr Kyeremateng and Dr Bawumia.
Per the agreement, he says, the two will be allowed to campaign but whoever loses will automatically be the running mate to the other.
"...that will be the best for the party...Nana Addo, former President John Agyekum Kufuor can call the two of them and reach an agreement. it can bring stability to the party; Nana Addo should be able to hand over to another NPP government and so the elders should advocate for things that will bring unity and not division...," he suggested.

This is e well thought advice of the most sagacious person I have ever known. Mr. Akwasi Nti Asamoah has proved that indeed he is a great Wiseman in Ghana. The advice may sound uncommon and unprecedented in Ghana politics but there is is always the first time in every thing. The agreement doesn't need to be official. It can be a secret pact between Alan and Bawumiah themselves for the good of Ghana and their own party. it will show that they are both wise and competent to serve the nation and not their ego and ambition. It will foster the respect they have for one another h and reduce tension among their supporters. The pact will enable them to continue to work hard now for the party and still carry out healthy campaign. The pact will still enhance the image of NPP as a democratic fraternity which respects the will of the people to promote and organize a clean election within the party. Akwasi Nti Asamoah has set the ball rowing it is now left to the genius in NPP to execute his wisdom. POP
Please NO. Whoever wins should have the freedom to select his/her own running mate.
Stoupid suggestion. You pick a running mate because of trust not because of a party agreement. If that was so, why didn't nana addo pick alan as running mate. Am not sure what exactly is wrong with some people, that they want barwumia to still lead the party. The guy has been a failure as vice president. An economist has now turned into a digital man. If he competes with mahama the asante votes will surely be divided 50 50 and that goes to the advantage of mahama to win easily. Alan is an asante so he still get the 75 to 80 percent for the party. People are not thinking. Whenever NDC get 30% votes in asante they win so when they get 50, it is a done deal. Everything is against barwumia as flagbearer. Ghanaians sees him as a liar and a deceitful conman. His record is so abysmal.
