Former President John Mahama has asked the ruling government to take "farming and farming-related business serious".
In a message on Facebook celebrating farmers as the nation marked its National Farmers Day, Mahama said "with Ghana's economy at the brink of collapse" it's time to prioritise "agribusiness and support with favourable financing for farmers and all actors in the agricultural value chain"
"With Ghana's economy at the brink of collapse, as proven by Rating Agencies through their unending downgrades, and the hardship it has brought to many homes, this is the time for government to begin to take farmers and farming related businesses serious. This is the surest way we can reduce imports, strengthen the struggling cedi and save Ghana's economy. I urge government to prioritise agribusiness and support with favourable financing for farmers and all actors in the agricultural value chain" he stated.
Meanwhile, this year's celebration was under the theme “Accelerating Agriculture through Value Addition”.

Mr. Mahama it was in yur time as president that we had a negative Agric sector growth. Where was yur wisdom when yu had all the power in Ghana to make a positive change. The abled Dr. Akoto is already making Agric attractive for the youth and women in Ghana.
Former president Mahama should tell us how he improved the agribusiness. The best minister of Agric and Nana Akuffo Addo is fixing the economy he, Mahama destroyed and he says what.. He is coming to tell us we do forget easily anaa. We won’t tolerate that anymore. Ghana is bigger than him. Meanwhile Dr. Akoto and Nana Akuffo are serious aready fixing the economy as fast as it could. Ghana shall work through agricultural acceleration.
Former president Mahama doesn't cease to amaze me. Anyway he says Ghanaians are forgetful. I will leave it here
Hahahaaaa, in opposition they have all the solutions to the country's problems. Give them power and they behave as if they have never sat in the four walls of a classroom. JM, what was the state of agribusiness during your term as Vice President and subsequently president? Was it under the NDC that Ghana recorded a negative growth in agriculture?
Indeed the Proverb is right! 'Ehen a bid ***barred word*** falls......'. We saw and know what you did when nothing had happened to the world. Wait, you will see your smoothness level in 2024!
The former president should tell us what he did for the agribusiness and not what we should do in the difficult time b'cuz we're much aware what the Minister of Food and Agric, Dr Owusu Afriyie Akoto is doing for the agribusiness.
The sector minister, Dr Owusu Afriyie Akoto knows what he is doing, former president Mahama should give us break
Times are hard but this economy is not on a brink of collapse. Why didn't you prioritize agribusiness during your 5 years' dumsor economy? Unlike your government, this government prioritized agriculture right from day one. So what are talking about? Rating agencies downgrates do not collapse economies but what the government does to preserve foreign reserves such as imports restrictions is the most important.
Which economy is at the brink of collapse? Even your fives years dumsor could not collapsed the economy. This government has many options to put things in order. The government can decide to stop the free SHS, nurses allowance, teacher training, free meals to day SHS students and many freebies and the government can get over Gch 10 billion to spend.
