Kwabena Agyapong, a Presidential aspirant and former General Secretary of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), has kicked against the election of Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as flagbearer of the party.
Ten aspirants including Dr. Bawumia and Kennedy Agyapong are contesting the upcoming Presidential race of the NPP.
Speaking in an interview on Peace FM's 'Kokrokoo' programme, Mr. Agyapong explained that it has been sixteen (16) years since President Nana Akufo-Addo appointed Dr. Bawumia to be his Running Mate and both leading the country under this dispensation.
To him, it is time for a change of leadership in the NPP.
"They have been there for sixteen solid years as a ticket . . . sixteen years is a very long time in politics, that is why there are termed offices in presidency which is two terms. And now there are great majority of the party people who feel we need a drastic departure from the statue quo . . . we need a new lease of life for the party and also the country, a new dawn, a new face, new ideas, a new team that can restore the confidence of the party grassroots," he said.
"This is a very important landmark; a watershed election because no one has got a third term before. And right now, we need a leader who can restore the confidence of the party, the grass roots. We need a set of clean hands that will inspire the confidence of Ghanaians in us. It's very important, that is why there is a need for a drastic departure from the status quo. In my honest opinion, an extension of the status quo will not enhance our chances.
"The party needs a change. After sixteen (16) solid years of that leadership, there is the need for a change; a new freshness that can go and engage the Ghanaian people and especially our party base...I think it will enhance our chances of winning in 2024," he told host Kwami Sefa Kayi.
He also asked the President and the leaders within the party to ensure a fair level playing field for all the candidates.

Hahaaaa, if Bawumia has been there for 16 years which you consider a long time. What about you. You were the press secretary to former President Kufuor during his tenure as president. That appointment was equally a political one. How many years is it now from 2001? Yours is a very very long time so you need to also give way . Step down now and rather join Bawumia to ' break the 8, then he can think of fixing you somewhere. As for the presidency you haven't reached there yet.
Totally empty talk. He have no message. His attitude removed him from office as general secretary.
A man without a message except an ego. Why are you focused on Dr Bawumia? Is he the only contestant? Or you are scared of him? Grow up!
Why dies he talk about what he can do and is made of? People who do as him have NOTHING to offer!
I am disappointed in you Kwabena Agyei Agyapong. You stand no chance in this race. Instead of you selling your message your are attacking BMW. It's only Joe Ghartey who has not attacked BMW among the favourites. Hon. Joe Ghartey, I saluute you. You are an example to the youth of the nation. GOD bless our motherland Ghana and make it great and strong. 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
You say you want to be president. When you are given the opportunity on the radio to sell your message to the people, you spend all the time talking about others and what they should do. In the end, you don't even give the listeners a reason why they should vote for you. Pathetic.
This guy is loosing it all, he doesn't make sense any more,I think he's so bitter and ***barred word*** of Bawumia, otherwise how would he say Dr Bawumia has been around the presidency for 16 years, we all know this gov't is in its 8 year term...where was he when Bawumia took the party on his shoulders at Supreme Court, when Bawumia was seriously amassing the party's votes from the northern regions, a traitor and his cohort were stabbing the party at the back...
He will bring a new team that's all is needed. Kwabena you have also been in politics for long and if you go by that analogy then you should not even be contesting. If I recall, you have been around since Adu Boahene's days but still hanging around and wanting to clinch the main deal. Just share your ideas and stop focusing on DR Bawumia. Why is that all the other contestants are zooming in on Dr Bawumia instead of selling their own message. Focus on your self and your messages and leave the DR alone.
Very disappointed with your comments Mr Kwabena Adjepong,
Kwabena please give us your superior ideas to enable us make that judgment. We don't change for the sake of change. 16 years of service to the party is a sign of loyalty which should be commended and condemned.
