Prof. Smart Sarpong has replied the National Democratic Congress on its promise to increase cocoa price to GH¢2800.
The National Democratic Congress has downplayed President Akufo-Addo’s recent announcement of GH¢1308 producer price per bag of cocoa and ccording to them, the price increment should not have been less than GH¢2500.
“As we speak now, cocoa prices have seen the biggest increment since 1977, so it is your season to make a profit. If NDC were to be in government, we would have a bag of cocoa at GH¢2,500 and add a premium of GH¢300. So you would have received GH¢2,800 per bag”, Ajumako Enyan Assiam Member of Parliament (MP), Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson said at a conference with cocoa farmers at Dadiesoaba in the Ahafo Region.
But Professor Smart Sarpong finds this at variance with truth and reality.
Reading a research conducted by him, he indicated that the Assin North by-election was primarily won by the NDC due to their promise to increase cocoa price from 800 cedis under the Akufo-Addo administration to between 1200-1600 cedis.
This, he asserted, played a major role in shaping the minds of the constituents to elect the NDC candidate, James Gyakye Quayson, back into Parliament.
Nonetheless, if the President has decided that cocoa prices should go up to over GH¢1300, it is, to him, very shocking that the same NDC that promised 1600 cedis per bag a few months ago will make a U-turn to tell Ghanaians otherwise.
He found the NDC promise "misleading", stating although some things are for political optics, the party however needs to stick to the truth.
"Let's be moderate with the truth; at least, let's try and be moderate with the truth. We will tell some marginal lies somehow but we have to try as much as possible to be moderate with the truth," he stated while making his submissions on Peace FM's "Kokrokoo" show.
