She is noted for coming out with love themed songs and singer, Raquel’s latest song, Lakabo follows the trail. A “word of letter” to the guys as she says in the song, Lakabo is a message to the men who don’t treat their partners well and as a result make them go through emotional trauma.

Raquel calls on women to stand for their rights and work hard to be independent so they don’t become dependant on men who don’t appreciate their importance.

She sings that many young ladies become victims of heart breaks because they fall prey to the “lies and schemes” of men.

Perhaps, to prove her versatility, the Yawa singer takes a different path on Lakabo, which she described as “Afro hip hop”.

The song has a funky feel and a hip hop rhythm that could get anyone to tap the feet but Lakabo may not be a familiar trend for followers of Raquel who have known the Odo singer for her Afro Pop and R&B kind of music.

But Raquel believes that shouldn’t be a limitation for her as an artiste.

In an interview with Showbiz on Tuesday, she asserted that it was proper and right for artistes to “test the waters” with other genre and not be restricted by what they know. That, she said, helps the artiste to explore the talent widely.

“Doing hip hop is not something new to me at all. I have been a great fan of it but I needed to make good use of my voice that is why I chose to do more of R&B. Lakabo has given me the opportunity to go back to my first love,” she said.

The sultry singer who is also known for songs such as Keha mi, Shake Your Body and Set Me Free said it was early for the public to judge her performance on the song.

When growing up, Raquel said her choice of music was influenced by the likes of Brandy, Shirley Brown, Aaliyah, Mary J, Faith Evans but surprisingly, she had a special liking for Wulomei and believes that influenced the kind of music she does now.

“My music is evolving, expressive, full of sweet melodies and also talks about real life issues. everything we experience,” she remarked.
