Afrodesiac Worldwide, a Ghanaian fashion company, on Monday feted pupils of Street Academy and donated assorted items valued 3,000 Ghana Cedis to the school.
The items included a computer and its accessories, text books, Casio calculators and bags. Ms. Charmell Dukes Chiedza, Chief Executive Officer, Afrodesiac Worldwide, said the donation was done in collaboration with Rebecca Project for Human Rights, a Non Governmental Organization based in Washington DC, United States.
According to Ms. Chiedza, she was touched by the plight of street kids hence the donation to enhance teaching and learning of the less privileged. She lauded the role of teachers who are doing all they could to support the education of street children in the country. Ms. Chiedza, who is also a flight attendant of Delta Airlines, said her organization would soon roll out leadership programmes to expose pupils especially, girls to issues on leadership.
"We need to expose the kids to programmes outside their environment so that they could become well vexed with issues around them." In addition, she said her organization would also stock the Street Academy Library with books to enhance teaching and learning.
Mr. Ataa Lartey, Proprietor of Street Academy, who received the items thanked Afrodesiac Worldwide and pledged the academy's commitment to expose hidden talents of the less privileged kids in the field of sports, culture, music and drama as well basic education. He said the school which had 93 pupils takes care of children between the ages of 10 to 17 years who had not been to school.
"At the school, pupils spend one to three years here, as soon as we identify their hidden talents, we offer them some trade. Those who are brilliant are offered formal education," he added. Mr. Ataa Lartey was happy that the school could now boast of two of its students in the university and two others also at Training College. 25 Jan. 10
