THE Prince of wheels scattered crowds as he careered around his back garden on an electric bike. Charles, 62, saddled up for a surprise trip on the green machine after inspecting a series of eco vehicles including a car fuelled by cheese at his London home yesterday.
After abruptly setting off, the Prince was heard to say "which button do I push?" as the bike accelerated over a gravel path and bumped up a grass verge.
Grinning with delight, the heir to the throne finally wrestled control of the bike to the applause of dozens of invited guests. The 1,895 Spencer Ivy bike is one of the vehicles on display at the Prince's Start festival which begins on Sunday and shows how people can live more sustainably.
It can cover 50 miles on a single charge with a top speed limited to 15mph. Bike company director Va Hua said: "I was quite surprised - he just said he wanted a go and then took off."Many of the vehicles on display will take part in the Bridgestone eco rally from Oxford to London on Sunday, which finishes in The Mall.
The public will also be allowed to visit the Prince's Clarence House gardens in London free for the first time as part of the event.Earlier TV presenter Kirstie Allsopp was among guests attending a preview in the gardens yesterday, which includes an eco house, organic food stalls and a 'pop up restaurant'. She told the Prince: "It's wonderful, we've all come to steal ideas from your garden."
