Even before MUSIGA members start paying their dues for the New Year and under a new leadership, an amount of US$100,000 has been dropped in their treasury.

This kind gesture was made by business mogul and owner of Accra’s hottest entertainment centre, Citizen Kofi.

Dr. Kofi Amoah pledged an amount of US$100,000 to MUSIGA to help them rejuvenate and revitalize the somewhat dormant association and asked other corporate organizations and institutions to “step up to the mic” to help Ghana’s music industry.

He made the pledge at the swearing-in ceremony of the new president and his executives on Thursday September 8 in Accra.

Now I have been made to believe that at the swearing-in of any democratically elected President, his or her other contestants are supposed to be at the ceremony but this was not the case at the swearing-in of the new MUSIGA President Bice Obour Osei Kufuor.

Conspicuously missing was his fiercest contender for the seat of the Presidency, the ‘Simgua man’ and three time contender Gyedu Blay Ambuley a.k.a ‘abaad3 hrriii’

The ‘Ragum zo’ hit maker who placed third after the successfully organized MUSIGA congress in Tamale was nowhere to be found during the grand event which saw several of the old and new generation of Ghana’s musicians converging at one place to show their support for their youthful and ambitious president who is under 30.

It was a sight to behold looking at the cross-section of musicians from all genres gathering at headquarters of the association with this being the first time for many of the new musicians.

From where I sat, I could see the likes of Nana Kwame Ampadu (Former General Secretary MUSIGA), Ben Brako, A.B Crentsil, Besa Simons, Rex Omar, Alhaji Sidiku Buari (former president of MUSIGA), K.K Kabobo, Oheneba Kissi, Reverend Mary Ghansah, Paulina Oduro, Chizzy Wailer, Nana Tufour and several others who have blazed the trail of Ghanaian music over the years but with nothing to show for it.

At least President Obour has promised to ensure that their toil would not be in vain, in the next four years, as he steers the affairs of the association.

Obuor

Obour’s enthusiasm to champion the course of the younger generation of musicians with the help of the older notable drew in the younger contemporary artistes, who hitherto, showed little interest in the association.

The likes of Okyeame Kwame (Obour’s right hand man), Tinny, Richie, Efya, Eazzy, Tic Tac, VIP, 4 x 4, Asem who admitted in an interview that he was attending a MUSIGHA related program for the first time, was elated with the fresh breath of air breezing through the association.

Out-gone MUSIGA president Mrs. Diana Hopeson advised the new president and his executives to work as a team. She said “you may have team players, passive team players and non team players all within the same team and that is what makes it very interesting.

It is up to an individual in a team to answer: which team player am i?
“Identify these tendencies and keep watch over one another in love and respect”.

Comparing himself to the likes of Jesus Christ and Bob Marley, President Obour indicated that he was initially disappointed when he was categorized too young to lead MUSIGA. “This is because most of the people that I admired in my world were also considered very young and were able to change their world still at a very tender age. “Tupac Amaru Shakur was named by the Rolling Stones Magazine amongst the greatest artiste of all time at the age of 25.

“Martin Luther King was elected president of the Southern Christian Leadership conference at the age of 28. “Bob Nester Marley became a cultural ambassador for the Jamaican people and the Rastafarian religion and held a nearly god-like status when he was 30 years.

“Jesus Christ after whom Christianity was named performed the greatest miracles in this world whiles he was between the ages of 30 -33 so I am not perturbed”. We wish President Obour and his new administration all the best as they prepare to take Ghanaian music to a higher level.
