Unless the much-talked-about rapture happens today, Sammi Awuku, the deputy Director of Communications for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), will tomorrow, May 1 2012, perform traditional marriage rites as a prelude to a talk-of-the-town wedding ceremony with a former beauty queen who currently works at Zenith Bank.
The wedding ceremony, NEWS-ONE has gathered, will come off sometime in June and tomorrow’s engagement is a private ceremony exclusively for a few relations and close friends.
Mr. Awuku and sources close to him have kept their lips glued over the venue and time of engagement. NEWS-ONE has also been denied an invitation to the ceremony. When the paper reached Mr. Awuku over the matter, he asked the paper to go and find out about details of the ceremony because he did not see how his marital issues could be of interest to the media.
“Aahhhh you guys reported that I was having a wedding in May and now you are talking of an engagement in May. Which is which? In any case, this is not something I want to speak about in the media,” Mr. Awuku noted.
NEWS-ONE has information that the lady works as a Customer Service Advisor in one of the Zenith Bank branches and is a former president of the Volta Hall at the University of Ghana.
She is said to fellowship at the Liberty Centre Assemblies of God Church at Abeka in Accra where Mr. Awuku, in the second week of February, personally picked forms from the marriage, guidance and counseling department and submitted the forms filled and signed, a few days later.
The two have been dating for some time now and further checks by NEWS-ONE revealed that contrary to earlier reports, the lady is not a pastor’s daughter. Mr. Awuku has uncharacteristically kept a low-profile in recent times and stayed out of the media.
A source from the NPP Communication’s department revealed that Sammi Awuku’s role as a Deputy Director of Communications put a tedious and demanding responsibility on him; therefore he was advised to postpone his marriage plans until after the 2012 elections.
The source said Mr. Awuku however turned down the suggestion with an explanation that he did not want to marry next year when his party would probably be in government and that he had taken a cue from the examples of Deputy Information Minister Okudjeto Ablakwa and Director of Operations at the Presidency, Nii Lantey Vanderpuye, who both married when their party came to power and received a huge backlash and media bashing.
