Miss Malaika 2011 Winners Receive Prizes

She sent shock waves across the country when she mounted a political platform to campaign for the ruling National Democratic Congress.

First runner up of Miss Malaika 2011 Alexandra Ayirebi-Acquah who created so much controversy for not winning the coveted Miss Malaika crown last year, was seen on stage vigorously propagating the NDC’s “Better Ghana Agenda” at the official launch of the party’s manifesto held in the Volta regional capital Ho, yesterday Thursday October 4, 2012.

The event which was live on several Television and Radio networks across the country and beyond saw the beauty queen speaking about the immense contribution in the education sector within the past three years of the party’s reign, urging Ghanaians, specifically the youth, to vote the NDC back to power.

The Malaika runner walked up the heavily tensed political stage out of the blue, and first mentioned her full name and introduced herself as a level 300 student of the University of Ghana, Legon before she sent her message across.

“My name is Alexandra Ayirebi-Acquah and I am from the University of Ghana. I am a level 300 student. I am thrilled and excited to see that finally we have a government that is committed to the youth, to our future generation and the future of this country”, Alex stressed.

She further elaborated the plight of students in the country and the efforts the NDC government has made to solve the problems students are facing in Ghana.

“So many students are excited with pursuing a higher level of education but there are no schools for them and they don’t have access to some of these opportunities that we have access to but under the NDC, they have established two brand new state of the art universities in the Volta and Brong Ahafo region so that students can go to school, study and give back to their country”.

Alexandra who spoke on top of her voice so everyone can hear her, also spoke about how the NDC have supported students in Ghana through the Ghana Education Trust (GET) Fund. “Under the NDC, five thousand students have benefited from the Science and Mathematics scholarship under the GET fund. Under the NDC, we have seen students get into the technology fever with their laptops, and are coming up with brand new creative ideas that are going to push Ghana into the next millennium”. She finally concluded her brief statement saying “I don’t know about you but I am set and I know where my vote is going to”, she said as she screamed “NDC”, before she walked off the stage.

Peacefmonline.com contacted Charter House, producers of Miss Malaika, to find out what they have to say about Alex’s open support for the NDC. They declined commenting on her personal decision explaining that she was on stage as a University of Ghana student and a Miss Malaika runner up, and moreover she is no longer under the management of the company.

Alexandra Ayirebi-Acquah born on the 29th of April 1991 was the first runner up for Miss Malaika Ghana 2011, and is currently a level 300 student at the University of Ghana.

She is described by many as friendly, smart and pretty interesting. Anyone who has met Alex, as she is popularly called, will testify to her cheerful and bubbly nature; and though she may be down to earth, Alex is no pushover. Her parents, Dr. Ebenezer Ayirebi-Acquah and Mrs. Evelyn Ayirebi-Acquah, have 7 children including Alexandra and her twin sister.

Alex had always wanted to be a part of the Miss Malaika beauty pageant. Her desire to be a part of it actually started while she was still at Morning Star. She was inspired by the 1st runner up of Miss Ghana 2002, Maame Esi, who went on to secure the 1st runner up position at the international level.

‘I will definitely be a part of this’ she exclaimed, totally inspired by Maame Esi’s smartness, elegance and marvellous performance at the beauty pageant.

Though her family and friends did not approve of her taking part for various reasons, Alex had since followed the competition and personally worked towards taking part in the competition. It was her Mum who later pledged her full support when she realised how dearly the competition meant to her daughter, as she tried out for the third time in 2011.

Naturally a hard-working girl, Alex decided to work on herself early enough to prepare herself for participation. She started to read more books, cultivated the habit of undertaking activities like teaching that nurtured her confidence and public speaking, learnt to convince and influence people through her fund raisers, and also did some event hosting here at Legon just before the start of the competition.

To top it all up, she worked on her relationship with God. ‘I believe that success comes from God and hence the need to pray,’ she told us. For someone who used to stammer but is now most notable for her eloquence and her confident way of speaking, we can say Alex really did her homework.

Alex tried out for Miss Malaika in two previous years; in 2009 when Gezelle Adai won it and in 2010 when Ama Nettey won. In both years, she never went beyond the main auditions. She believes she did not get herself to go that far in those years because she hadn’t groomed herself properly and did not feel ready. Born with that spirit of persistence and determination, Alex did not give up but considered three a lucky number and gave it her all in 2011.

During the competition Alex earned the respect and won the hearts of many fans as she particularly stood out as a fine blend of confidence, dedication, eloquence, and humility. She won most of the competitions and set a marvellous mark during their fund raising event when she beat the highest amount ever raised, of GH₵ 200, by raising a whooping sum of GH₵ 1,300.

In fact her year saw the biggest spark of controversy ever in the competition during the finals, when most patrons of the pageant felt that the final results placing her in the second position wasn’t transparent and that Alex, no doubt, deserved to have been crowned as the 2011 Miss Malaika beauty Queen.
