In days leading to Fennec Okyere’s tribute song to his manager has come under some scrutiny and severe criticism.

The making of quality tributes to the dead will definitely not bring them back to life but when such songs are done right, their memories linger on and on for years, especially when they garner good airplay – and once they are good tributes, they will be played.

Kwaw’s tribute ‘Give Thanks’, recorded in memory of his manager, is far from good, it sucks big time – one of the worst songs ever recorded by the artiste.

The song lacks proper arrangement, has no lyrical content, no style, lacks finesse and makes little sense; a huge disappointment coming from an artiste regarded as one of the best hiplife/hiphop artistes in Ghana.

Many expected the artiste to rap/sing about his close relationship with his friend, brother and confidante – their struggles and their triumphs and all the good times they shared and the many things they did that could have made a good tribute song.

The ‘Give Thanks’ tribute sounds rushed and Kwaw was under no pressure to come out with that garbage of a tribute song. He could have taken his time to put lyrics together and presented a good story that could have made it a memorable tribute for an accomplished artiste-manager like Fennec Okyere.

The late Okyere would turn in his grave in disapproval and rejection to the whacky song from his most-trusted friend and brother.

A good tribute song will not bring Fennec back but it could have been given a masterful touch, a touch that would have ensured its continuous play and a lasting legacy for Fennec.

Kwaw’s lyrical performance in the song was shameful and his story line was calamitous. The talk of Dre Beats and the issue of Lil’ Wynn in a tribute song for Fennec were dreadful.

It will do Kwaw Kesse a lot of good if he quickly goes to the studio after Fennec is laid to a good rest and puts together a quality tribute that will be worth the airtime.
