NPP, NDC Scramble For Lumba'’s Song

The popular hit track “Yentie Obiaa” by Ghana’s Highlife icon, Charles Kwadwo Fosu, appears to be dominating not only in entertainment circles but also in the country’s political arena, as it is gradually becoming a conduit for which some politicians communicate to their audience.

A few weeks ago, the defeated former General Secretary of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) adapted the song, ostensibly to express his disappointment at what he believes was a lack of appreciation on the part of delegates who voted against him during the party’s Delegates Conference held in the Northern Regional capital, Tamale.

However, the latest prominent political figure to have found love with the song, laden with insinuation and lamentations of ingratitude, is His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, who has also adopted the track as his official song during his three day tour in the Ashanti Region.

No sooner had the President touched base at the Kumasi Airport on Friday than the vehicle carrying the Public Address System started playing the track, repeating it several times as the convoy journeyed through town to the various destinations the President visited.

But residents in Kumasi are interpreting the use of the song differently; with some claiming it is an attempt by the President to deride the people of Ashanti for their opposition towards the National Democratic Congress and his administration.

The assertion was further heightened by the President’s speech during his official visit to the Manhyia Palace, where he launched an onslaught at people he claims, are doom mongers.

President Mahama arrived in Kumasi on Friday for a three day official tour, his first since being sworn into office in January last year.

The tour took him to various locations across the region, including Tepa and Ejura, where he inspected ongoing projects and cut sod for new ones to commence.

The President and his entourage paid a courtesy call on the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II and earlier on Friday visited the rejuvenated Kumasi Shoe Factory currently being operated by the Ghana Armed Forces.

He also met with the student community in the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) where he briefed the students on the current state of the economy and what the government was doing to address the numerous challenges facing the country.
