Minister for Tourism, Arts and Culture Catherine Afeku has defused criticisms as to why President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s daughter was appointed to the Creative Arts Council.
The Minister has urged critics to be circumspect in their comments stressing that Gyankroma Akufo-Addo is more than qualified to be appointed to the Council.
Madam Afeku on Wednesday inaugurated a new Creative Arts Council, headed by Mark Okraku Mantey, at a ceremony at the Ministry in Accra.
Also appointed to the Council was Gyankroma Akufo-Addo, daughter of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and actress Bibi Bright, who will serve as Secretary.
The three-member team, according to the Minister, would select the rest of the Council’s members and also set up the right framework for the council.
Some industry players have questioned Gyankroma Akufo-Addo’s appointment to the Council considering that she is not a known industry person.
The sector Minister defusing the criticisms explained in an interview with Joy News that, “President’s children have a right to work. It is [in] the Constitution and they are Ghanaians by birth, by right and her credentials speak volumes.”
She further defended that, “The people in the industry when they heard her were mesmerized that it is not just being a daughter of a president but [she] is passionate, she is very well respected in the industry worldwide and he has the credentials to back it.”
“I think we also need to stay away from this notion of if you are a child or a relative of a leader and you are qualified you cannot be given a position.
"I need to put it and put it very firmly that this is a sector that enjoins all creative people. She is extremely qualified and I am the one to work with her and not her father,” Madam Afeku reiterated.

Yaw, thank you very much for your comments. I agree with you. When I first heard about her appointment the only question I asked is, is she qualified. If she is, terr should be no pRobles there. In the very unfortunate situation that the council fails in its duties we all low who we will be going for. Ghana please let's support them to move all of us forward. Catherine and the council, if we here of any scandals, be ready to resign. We won't allow anyone to disgrace our nana.
This is how it begins. Then scandals. Why have you not posted here CV to prove she is competent? Wasn't the president reading our CVs?
If that position does not require her to be elected then what is our problem. Who is more NPP than the daughter of the President who had to bear the the difficulty of not staying around her father especially during the campaign period. Excuse me.....who prescribes the qualification of public service. I think the hypocricy and the loud talk is becoming too much. Should one be seen on the television or heard on radio before he is given a position? Lady please do your work and just be sure that you give your best to mother Ghana.
peacefm grow up in ur journalism u posted this earlier and we showed our comment so why change the headline and bring it up again, cheap jounalism is what u are doing so grow up a bit. If Gyankroma was to be a public image before it wouldnt have been a problem but since is his dad wo is now the presdoo people will think she was giving the position cos is her dad ruling, it would have been best if she was into it already
Minister, please don't let eye service block objectivity and sensibility. The best will be not place her in any public position.
