Foreign Act For Girl Talk After Efya

After five successful years of using female Ghanaian artistes to headline its Girl Talk concerts, Palm Media, organisers of the event are reportedly considering a foreign artiste for next year’s edition.

This year’s concert will be the last one for songstress, Efya, who has been headline act since 2015 and it has appropriately been themed “The Bowout”. But it has also left Palm Media in a dilemma over who could replace her.

Information Showbiz is gathering indicates that a Nigerian or South African artiste will probably take over the headlining duties next year.

A source close to the organisers disclosed that considering the heights that Efya has taken the show to, they do not believe any other Ghanaian female artiste has the clout to top that hence their decision to look outside the country’s shores.

The source said although there are some female artistes who are doing very well and even topping charts, they may not have what it takes to front the Girl Talk show, which has grown into a reputable brand and draws huge patronage.

Girl Talk started in 2012 with Afropop singer, Becca who also fronted in 2013 and 2014. Although she had already made her name, she fully won the public’s confidence with how skillfully she handled her role. She was great and all the extras she used to spice up the shows were a hit.

Then Efya took over in 2015 and she took it to another level. Her stagecraft, including some daring splits blew the audience away and in 2016, she did more. Although details are yet to be released about her “Bowout” concert, there can be no doubt that she will make it worth the audience’s while.

However, the organisers’ consideration of a foreign female artiste as Efya’s successor should raise discussions about our female artistes and their performance both locally and on the international market.

While female artistes like Tiwa Savage, Asa, Yemi Alade, Simi, Waje, Seyi Shay among others from Nigeria are soaring, our female acts rather seem to be diminishing for reasons not readily available. The only girl standing now is Dancehall artiste, Ebony.
